29-12-2003: "Happy New Year!!!!"
I got a request from non Dutch speakers who have difficulties with reading the Dutch language. Can you imagine? Therefore this time my weekly update in English... On the 24th of December the whole team went down to Herat to celebrate Christmas with all expats who are working for MSF-Holland in Afghanistan. It was a unique opportunity that all expats could come together at the same time. It was nice to celebrate Christmas with my colleagues so that I actually could find out who is who. On Christmas Eve we went to ICRC (Red Cross). They have a bar on their compound and also expats of other NGO's are free to go there for a drink or two, three, four.... A good start for the Christmas days...
On the first Christmas day the Herat team was in charge to prepare a meal. The food was great. For brunch we had salmon and ham rolls. For dinner we had Turkey. It was a traditional English Christmas meal with real Christmas pudding as a desert. The next day (Boxing Day) was our turn to arrange the food. Fortunately we had a lot of leftovers which made it quite easy. We made a Thai curry with vegetables and turkey from the day before. Al together it was very nice to be away from the project and to focus on something else for a few days. The next morning we went back to Qala-I-Naw. There is a lot going on at the moment. Therefore the team will split up in two groups when we go to the field. I will go to Khairkhane where we start screening TB-patients for a TB-cohort. Also with New Year the team will be in the field. The Afghan people are using a different era and therefore new-year will not be a big party like at home. Probably I will be a sleep by the time its midnight. You can't have it all... For now I am looking forward to the New Year. It is a milestone in my mission and normally the X-mas days do not really give me an easiness of mind. I'd like to wish everybody all the best for the coming year with lots of prosperity and I hope that we can all meet again soon! Love Pim
