07-06-2003: "Artikeltje in het NRC van zaterdag 7 juni 2003"

Met het hemelvaartweekeinde werd ik opgebeld door Venneken Veldkamp, freelance journaliste voor het NRC. Zij was bezig met een artikel over het hedonistische idealisme van jongeren. Naast mijzelf werden nog drie anderen geïnterviewd. Het is best een aardig stukje geworden. Helaas is het hele artikel te groot voor de scanner. Ik heb een uitsnede gemaakt van mijn relaas.

Pim Kwint (38) uit Hoorn heeft zijn eigen IT-bedrijf opgegeven om voor Artsen zonder Grenzen naar Afghanistan te gaan. Sinds twee weken weet hij dat het Afghanistan wordt en gisteren is hij vertrokken. Kwint deed begin jaren tachtig de zeevaartschool - "Ik ben avontuurlijk ingesteld" - maar liet zich omscholen tot IT'er, omdat er geen werk was.

"Ik heb een paar jaar een automatiseringsbedrijf gehad, maar dat gaf me toch niet de bevrediging die ik zoek. Het gaat voortdurend om geld verdienen, dat heb je na een tijdje wel gezien. Ik wil liever iets nuttigs doen. Niet door geld te storten, ik wil zélf iets doen."

Als niet-medicus krijgt Kwint een logistieke baan bij een gezondheidscentrum in West-Afghanistan. "Het is daar heel lang droog geweest, zodat er veel ondervoede kinderen zijn. Wij maken daar het verschil tussen leven en dood, dat is toch fantastisch? Nederland is ook leuk, maar ik heb het idee dat het nergens meer over gaat." De stekker gaat 'letterlijk' uit zijn bedrijf, maar het is wel de bedoeling "dat ie er ook weer ingaat", als Kwint terugkomt.

Zijn vriendin vindt Pims nieuwe idealisme minder leuk. "We hebben een jaar nodig gehad om eruit te komen. Zij blijft in Nederland, ze kan me niet komen opzoeken, daarvoor is het gebied te onherbergzaam. Maar ik krijg verlof tijdens mijn verblijf, dus we ontmoeten elkaar buiten Afghanistan."

De ontvoering van AzG-medewerker Arjan Erkel in Dagestan vormt voor hem geen belemmering om te gaan. "Ik heb nu zoveel over Afghanistan gelezen en gesproken met mensen dat het alleen maar interessanter is geworden. Ik wil dit echt heel graag."

Wat een leuk artikel is het inderdaad geworden! En de foto is ook niet gek!
Nou Pim, ik hoop dat 12 juni echt D-Day gaat worden.. wat een kater dat je nu nog zo lang moet wachten. Maar goed, het is al bijna donderdag...
